Region III (Chicago) was infor-ed that an unplanned gaseous release occurred at 2:30 a.m. on 12/ 25/80.

The total release was about six curies of noble gas and lasted for about five hours.

The maxi =um release rate was about 1000 uCi/sec, about 2% of the technical specification instantaneous release limit.

No particulates or halo gens were released.

The release occurred during transfer of waste gas to a holdup tank.

A leaking valve was the apparent cause o f the release.

The licensee is continuin'g to investigate the problem.

There has been no media interest.

No press release is planned by the licensee or the NRC at this time.

The State of Illinois is being notified.

The Resident Inspector is reviewing the matter on site with support by telephone f rom a regional Padiation Specialist.

Region III received notification of this event by telephone from the NRC Watch Of ficer at 3:10 a.m. on 12/25/80.
