The Licensee 1nformed Region III that on September 9

The Licensee said that the waste in the container was solid1fied in Nsrch 1980, but that the contents had been inspected before, shipment and no fr ee

Two other Liners in thc shi pment a Lso contained UF solidi fi ed Hast e.

Inspec-tion of these Liners at the burial site disclosed no free Liquid~ but one of the two had crystaline material on a drain plug at the bottom of the container.

The Licensee said the state is coricerned that the crystals are an indication that the conta1ner may have Leaked in transit.

A, Licensee representative is at the burial site where ar rangements arc being made to dra1n the L1qu1d from the Liner.

There are indications that the

, state does not intend to suspend the licensee's burial site permit.

Neither the Licensee nor Region III plans a press release.

This PH 1s being issued because of the current generaL interest in radioactive waste burial-The State of Nichigan wiLL be notified.
