INJURY OF A WORKER Licensee Emergency Classification Notification of Unusual Event.
Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable On November 2, 1998, at 10:22 p.m. a contract worker in the Unit 1 containment fell from the operating deck (47 foot elevation) onto an elevated platform in the "C" Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) cubical (18 foot elevation).
The total fall distance was approximately 20 feet.
The worker fell through an opening which was normally covered with a grating.
The grating had been removed to facilitate the removal of a valve that was to be replaced in the "C" RCP cubical.
The site first aid team prcvided assistance to the individual.
The individual was found to have minor contamination of 1500 counts per minute above his eye, and decontamination was completed in route to the hospital.
The onsite ambulance transported the individual to the Riverside Regional Hospital, Newport News, Virginia, where he was diagnosed with a head injury.
He is presently in intensive care and classified as critical but in stable condition.
The licensee is investigating the event.
The residents are following this event.
There has been no media interest.
