NOTICE OF UNUSUAL EVENT DUE TO A FIRE ON SITE LASTING MORE THAN 10 MINUTES At:2:37 a.m.,
EDT on June 10, 1998, with Unit 4 at full power an Unusual Event was declared because a fire occurred in the 4A control rod drive motor generator set (generator bearing)
The fire was fully extinguished within 29 minutes after receiving the smoke alarm using the automatic Halon system and portable carbon dioxide extinguishers.
No personnel were injured and offsite assistance was not needed.
The plant continued operation at 100 percent power.
Unit 3 is also at 100 percent.
The Unusual Event was terminated at 3:00 a.m.,
EDT.
Th>> 4A and 4B rod drive motor generator sets are electrically cross tied so when the 4A rod drive motor generator set was secured, the 4B rod drive motor generator set suppled electrical power to all of the Unit 4 control rods.
An investigation by FPRL of the cause of the fire has been initiated.
A similar failure and fire occurred on the 4A motor generator set on March 4, 1997.
The licensee's investigation will also address the failure of 1 of 4 Halon bottles which did not actuate.
The NRC resident inspectors responded to the site and monitored actions in the control room and at the scene, and will continue to follow the licensee's actions.
The State of Florida has been notified.
The licensee does not plan to issue a press release.
This information is current as of 10:00 a.m.,
