'On. August 30, 1993, at 4:40 p.m., the NRC entered the Monitoring Mode-in

? response to Hurricane Emily which.is SE of the Brunswick. Steam Electric j_

Plant. This action was'taken because the situation-has been judged to-warrant continuous monitoring and assessment by the.NRC staff. The NRC 1

Regional Office in Atlanta,' Georgia, is directing the NRC efforts at this-1 time. There'is no threat to the public at this. time.

=In preparation.for hurricane. landfall, the residentLinspectorsgat the-

.l Brunswick and Surry reactor' sites have been following licensee-

.prepartions. Four resident inspectors are available=at the' Brunswick site 4

7 and three'will be available'for.the~Surry site.-Additionally, tat 10:55-1 a.nu this morning, a team of three inspectors,: headed by a Section Chief, l

was dispatched, in the-Regional Emergency Response Vehicle, to the.

' Brunswick site. TheirLestimated-time of arrival is between-7:00tto 8:001 p.m. this evening. The emergency vehicle'contains food, water'and material items'to be self-sufficient for threegto five days?

-Additionally, the vehicle carries two cellular telephones,'a high

. frequency radio and a portable satellite telephone for uas in.the event' u

Enormal-telephone ~ communications are disrupted.

.At-labout 3:00.p.m. today, the Regional State Liaison Officer arrived'at

.theLState Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, to interface with=the State of North Carolina.

.The States of North Carolina'and Virginia have been informed of Region II's activities. FEMA,. Region III,-in Philadelphia, _PA,'and; FEMA,iRegion' LlV, in Atlanta, Georgia, activated their Regional Operations Centerfon-
