The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date FACILITY:

Virginia Electric and Power Company Surry Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-281 Surry, Virginia

SUBJECT:

REACTOR TRI? AND SAFETY INJECTION ACTUATION At 10:07 p.m. on August 26, while increasing power to 80%, a reactor trip and safety injection occurred due to spurious steam header to steam line differential pressure caused by entrapped air in a bypass line around the n-ewly installed polishing demin-eralizers in the condensate system.

The plant conditions stabilized to normal post-trip conditions and the safety injection was terminated in accordance with plant procedures.

Stone and Webster will perform a hydraulic analysis of the feedwater system to determine the cause of the entrapped air and the necessary corrective actions.

The plant is returning to SO% power to conduct testing for this analysis.

Media interest in not expected. Neither licensee nor NRC plans to issue a news release.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has been notified.

The NRC Emergency Response Center received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 10:28 p.m. on August 26.
