Carolina Power and Light Company H. B. Robinson Docket No. 50-261 Hartsville, South Carolina
SUBJECT:
ABNORMALITIES IN FISH FROM LAKE ROBINSON Recent biological studies by the licensee have shown abnormalities in bluegill sunfish from Lake Robinson, as evidenced by depressed gill covers and, in some cases, irregularly shaped mouths. Lake Robinson provides cooling water for the H. B. Robinson Unit 1 (fossil) and Unit 2 (nuclear) power plants. Analyses show no abnormal radioactivity levels in either lake water or fish. The licensee has initiated intensified special studies to determine the cause of the problem; pesticide runoff and concentration of heavy metals are suspected.
The licensee plans to issue a press release today. NRC does not plan to issue a press release. The State of South Carolina and EPA have been informed. The South Carolina Department of Health and.Environmental Control is participating in the studies.
This PN is issued for information only.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of the results of the preliminary biological studies and the intended licensee press release by telephone from an onsite inspector at 4:00 p.m. on June 16.
This information is current as of 9:00 a.m. on June 17.
