SUBJZCTi REACTOR TRIP AND COOLDOMN ON NATURAL CIRCULATION At 2:26 a.m.

on June ll> vhile operating at 100'ower, the unit experienced a

complete loss of. corsponcnt cooling vater (CCW) to the reactor coolant pumps (RCP) as a result of a control solenoid failure on the CCV containmcnt isolation return valve.

This caused over heating of the seal water on all four RCP's and the unit and RPC's vere tripped manually at 2t34 a.m. in accordance with estab-.

li.shed procedures.

Reactor decay heat is being removed by natural circulation and the licensee is proceeding to place the unit in cold shutdovn at e rate of 60 to 70 degrees per hour to inspect the RCP seal packages.

Adequate subcooling margin was maintained on the BC& throughout t.he event and no abnormal RCS leakage, occurred.

There was no radi.oactive release:

As of &:00 a.m.

the RCS vas at 320 degrees and 400 pounds and thc cooldovn is proceeding normal1y.

The licensee expects to be able to terminate natural circulation cooling by placing'he shutdown cooling system in operation by approximately 9:00 a.m.

today.

Component cooling vater was restored to the HCP's at 4:05 a.m., but the licensee tnade a

conscious decision not. to attempt to restart t,hc RCP's due to their seals having been overheated during the event.

The licensee is continuing to investigate the cause of the solenoid failure and expects the unit to be shutdown for appioximately ten days to perform an inspection of the RCP seals.

The Resident. Inspector vas near the site and was onsi.te at 4:00 a.m.

The licensee T)lans to issue a press release today.

The NRC does-not plan to issue a news release.

The State oE F)orida has been notified.

The NRC Etocrgcncy Response Center received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 2:35 a.m.

on June ll.

This information is ctgrrcttt as of &:00 a.m.
