SUBJECT:
UPDATE: ROBINSON UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN DUE TO STEAM GENERATOR TUBE LEAK This preliminary notification (PN) provides an update to PNO-II-14-004 which addressed a March 7, 2014, shutdown from 100% power due to a Steam Generator tube leak on the C Steam Generator.
The licensee investigated the leak and performed Eddy Current Testing on each steam generator. The licensee discovered a single leaking tube in the C Steam generator that was caused by foreign material which penetrated the tube wall. The foreign material, which resulted from a maintenance activity during the previous refueling outage, was removed and the leaking tube was plugged.
The NRC conducted follow up inspections utilizing the resident inspectors and a specialist inspector dispatched from the Region II office. These inspectors reviewed the licensees inspection of the Steam Generators and repair of the C Steam Generator. The reactor was restarted on April 7, 2014, and the unit is returning to full power operation. The resident inspectors monitored the licensees actions to startup and return the unit to operation. The NRCs inspection activities will be documented in the NRC quarterly inspection report to be issued at the end of April 2014. This report will be publically available in ADAMS.
This preliminary notification is issued for information only. The State of South Carolina has been notified.
Region II received initial notification of this occurrence through the resident inspectors who had been monitoring licensee actions. The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 1:00 p.m. April 8, 2014.
