Event Location Code: POW

Subject:

INVOLVING CABLE INSULATION FROM TURBINE BUILDING LIGHTING TRANSFORMER On November 2,1993, at approximately 12:39 p.m., a fire was reponed in a 230 valt lighting tansfonner in the turbine building. The fire brigade responded and the turbine building was evacuated as a precautionary measure. The fire lasted for approximately 14 minutes before being extinguished, and the licensee declared an Unusual Event at approximately 1:00 p.m. Operators stripped the loads from the non-safety related bus, and lights in the turbine building and the radiological contmis check point were unavailable for approximately 30 minutes. The licensee evacuated the turbine building as a precautionary measure. Lights were restored and the licensee tenninated the Unusual Event at 1:57 p.m.

1 The fire did not result in any damage to safety related equipment, and only resulted in burned insulation on the electrical leads associated with a temporary feed from the lighting panel. The preliminary cause of the event is believed to be a loose electrical connection. Salem Unit I was defueled, and Salem Unit 2 remained at 100% power throughout the event. The Resident Inspectors observed licensee response from the Salem Unit 2 control room, and inspected the lighting panel after the event was tenninated.

The State of New Jersey has been notified. The licensee notified the press by telephone.
