March 7, 1988 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE"-PNO-I-88-25 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

Susquehanna Unit 1 Docket No. 50-387 Berwick, Pennsylvania

\\

Subject:

UNPLANNED.SHUTDOWN OVER 48 HOURS; Licensee Emergency Classification:

Notification of Unusual Event Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency X

Not Applicable At 12:07 p.m.

on 3/4/88 a Main Generator Load Reject signal caused the Main Turbine to trip.

The turbine control valves closed and an automatic reactor scram occurred.

Reactor vessel level decreased only slightly before being restored to normal levels by the reactor feedwater pumps.

Three safety relief valves lifted briefly as expected to mitigate the initial pressure spike.

No Emergency Core Cooling Systems actuated and the plant trip response was normal.

Investigation by the licensee determined that an operator working in the 230KV Switchyard bumped against the Span Protection Auxiliary Relay, causing it to actuate which generated a Main Turbine Trip Signal.

The licensee has decided to retain the unit in a shutdown condition for approximately 5 to 7 days to perform selected maintenance work.

The unit is expected to return to power operation during the weekend of March 12, 1988.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was informed.

The licensee has issued a Press Release.

This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only and no further action by the NRC is anticipated.

The resident inspectors are following up on this event.
