NUCLEAR REGULATDRY COMMISSION 8

WASHINGTON, D.C. 20 % 5-0001 AUG 311993 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Robert Baer, Chief Engineering Issues Branch Division of Safety. Issue Resolution FROM:

Aleck W. Serkiz Engineering _ Issues Branch Division of Safety Issue Resolution MEETING NOTICE

SUBJECT:

POTENTIAL FOR LOSS OF EMERGENCY CORE COOLING SYSTEMS IN BWRs DUE TO LOCA GENERATED DEBRIS i

i PURPOSE:

This meeting is to discuss analysis approaches and model development for work planned under Science and Engineering l

Associates, Inc. (SEA) Task 6 (Ref. Contract'NRC-04-91-071)'

prior to undertaking detailed analyses. The staff is aware of related work which has been performed or is underway and will be completed in the near future. This meeting provides l

l a forum for reviewing such work and determining how.such information should be integrated into SEA's ' analyses.

Pertinent references are included in this notice.

The objectives of Task 6 are to: a) estimate the probability of loss of LPCI/RHR in a reference BWR, assuming LOCA generated debris, using analysis methods similar to those used to analyze a PWR in NUREG-0879, Rev.1, b) develop a model for the evaluation of BWRs and c) investigate the potential effects of corrosion products and other types of debris which can be found in BWR suppression pools. This l

meeting will focus on objectives (a) and (b) noted above.

This meeting also provides an opportunity for other interested and knowledgeable parties to provide-their views and/or information related to this subject.

--- DRAFT 9/15/93 MEETING AGENDA ---

9:00 - 9:30 Introductory Remarks and Description of Planned Effort i

(A. Serkiz) 9:30 -11:30 Discuss probability of pipe breaks, locations, selection of reference BWR, piping layouts, insulation-debris generation, etc.

Identify a generic BWR analysis model which comports with the PWR model and analysis described in NUREG/CR-0869, Rev.1, Appendix D, "USI A-43 Regulatory Analysis,"- 10/85.

12:30 - 1:30 Discuss applicable LOCA generated debris transport models, suction strainer blockage models and estimating pressures drops which are debris material dependent.

1:30 - 2:30 Discuss estimating core damage frequency related to debris blockage, potential mitigating-actions and estimating impact of taking remedial action (s).

2:30 - 3:00 Wrap-up discussions.
