SUBJECT:

BUOYANCY, TRANSPORT, HEAD LOSS AND BREAKUP ASerkiz c/f CHARACTERISTICS OF ERCO-SIL 36S INSULATION ggDRh FOR NUCLEAR CONTAINMENT AREAS Enclosed for your information are two Alden Research Laboratory (ARL) reports dealing with selective characteristics of ERC0-SIL 36S insulation which is manufactured by Eastern Refractories Company, Inc. Safety concerns and 4

technical findings dealing with potential sump screen blockage due to post-LOCA transport of such debris are discussed in NUREG-0897, Rev.1. Generic Letter 85-22 which was issued upon resolution of USI A-43, " Containment Sump Performance," outlines safety concerns and recommends that RG 1.82, (Rev.1) be used as guidance in 10CFR 50.59 reviews dealing with change-out and/or modification of thermal insulation installed on primary coolant system piping and components.

! Mr. I. W. Watson of Eastern Refractories Co., Inc. indicated in his visit with Mr. A. W. Serkiz on September 15, 1986, that potential applications for this material exist at Boston Edison, TVA, PASNY and Georgia Power plants and that this type of insulation is being installed in various plant systems both internal and external to the containment. Therefore, you may be encountering this material in licensing reviews or plant insulation change-out.

ERC0-SIL 36S is a fibrous insulation with somewhat higher sump screen head loss characteristics than NUK0N, but not as deleterious as high density fiberglass (see NUREG-0897, Rev. 1). The pressure loss correlations provided in ARL Report 59-86/M544F can be used by your reviewers to estimate sump screen blockage losses and attendant impact on NPSH margin. If you have further questions please call A. W. Serkiz on (301) 492-7487.
