TO ALL POWER REACTOR LICENSEES AND APPLICANTS FOR AN OPERATING LICENSE

Gentlemen:

Subject: Operator Licensing Examination (Generic Letter 83-40)

In Generic Letter 83-01, we requested information from you to form the basis for scheduling manpower and resources to licensed operators and senior operators through 1985. Your responses were most helpful in that effort. We now need updated information and information through 1987. Therefore, we request a best estimate of your need for operator licensing examinations for the remainder of this fiscal year (January 1, 1984 to September 1984) and fiscal years FY 1985, FY 1986, and FY 1987 (October 1 to September 30 of each year). Please identify anticipated requests for site visits and the number of examinations for each visit in the attached suggested format to Mr. Don Beckham, Chief, Operator Licensing Branch, AR-5221, Washington, DC 20555, by January 16, 1984. Please respond even if you have no planned examinations during this period.

We understand that your plans for operator licensing examination visits may not be firm, but we need your best estimate to ensure NRC resources, will be available to meet your operator licensing needs. It is also important to keep us informed of significant changes in your estimates as they occur, so that we can keep our data base current. Please be aware that the NRC has budgeted resources for only two visits to each site per year for administering licensing examinations. Therefore, your submittal of this schedule does not guarantee the number or date of examinations requested. However, an accurate estimate of the need for examinations will allow us to propose budget modifications, if necessary.

We appreciate your assistance. If you have any questions concerning this request or your response, please call Mr. Don Beckham, Chief, Operator Licensing Branch, at (301) 492-4868.

This request was approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) under clearance OMB-3150-0018, which expires January 31, 1984.

Sincerely,

Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
