Docket No.:

50-321 NL-08-0396 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATrN: Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555-0001 Hatch Nuclear Plant - Unit 1 Control Rod Drive Return Nozzle Full Structural Weld Overlay Nondestructive Examination Results - 2008 Outage (1 R23)

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) has completed the Hatch Nuclear Plant (HNP) Unit 1 Control Rod Drive Return Nozzle full structural weld overlay.

This activity was accomplished in accordance with SNC's alternative ISI-ALT-08 01, Version 1 submitted to the NRC by letter dated February 26, 2008.

Subsequently, the NRC approved the alternative during a telephone conversation on February 29, 2008.

Page E1-5 of the alternative states, "SNC will provide the NRC, within 14 days after the completion of the ultrasonic examination of the weld overlay installations, (1) the examination results of the weld overlays and (2) a discussion of any repairs to the overlay material and/or base metal and the reason for repair." SNC completed the Performance Demonstration Initiative qualified ultrasonic examinations on March 7,2008.

  • Base Metal Repairs - During the initial dye penetrant (PT) examination of the base metal, four small indications slightly greater than 1/16" were identified.

The indications were buffed out (no grinding was necessary). A PT re examination was performed and there were no unacceptable indications.

  • Overlay Repairs - There were no repairs to the overlay.
