This plant, on the shore of Lake Michigan, will reach its 40 year intended lifespan in 2030 for Unit 1 and 2033 for unit 2. I am very concerned about the potential catastrophic events that would likely occur if there were to be a breakdown of any form, that would result in release of reactor radioactivity at this site, due to unanticipated deterioration of the structural integrity of the facility itself.
Even more worrisome may be the type of threat to this facility caused by unanticipated water exposure that is becoming more likely due to climate change. Were there to be an unanticipated major flood due to record rainstorms, major radiation release could become very real. Were a succession of unexpected storms to substantially raise the water level of Lake Michigan, even transiently, this could flood the facility, with the potential for catastrophic radiation release. As the water source for nearly 40 million people, large releases of radioactivity into Lake Michigan would have huge health effects.
As a physician that is involved in caring for children with cancer, and doing bone marrow transplants for individuals with bone marrows that have failed, I am worried about the effects of radiation. The experience the world saw with Chernobyl following the 1986 disaster, is more than enough evidence that our medical system is not prepared or able to respond to the major health consequences of this
type of potential radiation release here in Wisconsin.
A detailed review of the safety of this plant, taking into full consideration the trajectory of our worlds ongoing climate changes, seems an essential process, prior to deciding whether to allow this facility to be used beyond its intended 40 years.
