Kairos Power LLC Notification of Excavations for Hermes Safety-Related Structures

Reference:

Letter, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to Kairos Power LLC, Kairos Power LLC -

Issuance of Construction Permit for Hermes Test Reactor, December 14, 2023 (ML23338A254)

Subsequent to the issuance of the Hermes Construction Permit CPTR-6 (vis the referenced letter), Kairos Power has been preparing the Hermes site for construction activities associated with safety-related structures. This letter transmits the notification required by the construction permit condition 3.D. to notify the Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, or the Directors designee, once excavations for safety related structures are open for examination by the NRC.

As described in several audit meetings with NRC staff, the actual foundation design for the Hermes test reactor includes drilled piers that connect the foundation base mat to sound rock and will be part of the safety-related structures. The excavation for the first drilled pier began today, Thursday, May 1, 2025, and is expected to be available for examination on Monday, May 5, 2025. Subsequent excavations for the remaining drilled piers will be completed over approximately the next three months, subject to construction schedule variability. Kairos Power will remain in close contact with NRC project management to coordinate any requested examinations and inspections.
