The NRC Is Advanced Reactor Ready! Nuclear Reactor Regulation Vision and Strategy This exhibit provides an overview of the status of advanced reactor licensing and regulatory infrastructure enhancements.

  • Construction permits issued for Kairos Hermes 1 and 2 and Abilene Christian University
  • Released white paper on Nth-of-a Kind Microreactor Licensing and Deployment Considerations and held a dedicated public meeting for feedback
  • Established strategy and project teams to implement the ADVANCE Act of 2024 Recent Activities and Accomplishments

Broad and Extensive Advanced Reactor Engagement Is Ongoing Licensing Reviews (non-light-water reactor)

Fuel Fabrication Reviews Preapplication Activities Licensing Reviews (light-water reactor small modular reactor)

License Review in Progress Construction Permit Application Issued Ongoing Preapplication Activities/Potential Applications Fuel Fabrication Review

The NRC has prioritized public engagement for all advanced reactor activities. In addition to conducting over 100 public meetings per year, we have published numerous dashboards to provide further transparency on the staff's progress on licensing actions.

10 CFR Part 53Risk-Informed, Technology-Inclusive Regulatory Framework for Advanced Reactors:

  • The NRC proposes to establish an optional regulatory framework for use by applicants for new commercial advanced nuclear reactors.
  • The NRC staff expects to provide the draft final rule package to the Commission by May 1, 2026.

Developing Advanced Reactor Licensing Infrastructure New Nuclear Reactor Generic Environmental Impact Statement (NR GEIS):

  • The NRC staff has prepared a proposed rule for the Generic Environmental Impact Statement for Licensing of New Nuclear Reactors, Draft NUREG-2249.
  • The NRC staff uses the values and assumptions in a plant parameter envelope to evaluate a new nuclear reactor.
  • The NRC staff changed the applicability of the NR GEIS to any new nuclear reactor licensing application.

We Continue to Modernize Our Regulatory Framework Rulemaking and Guidance for Advanced Reactors Licensing Modernization Project Emergency Preparedness Rulemaking ADVANCE ACT of 2024 The NRC staff has created over 60 documents since 2018 to support modernizing our regulatory framework.
