Kairos KP-SAM Revised Resource Letter

Dear Mr. Gardner:

The purpose of this email is to inform Kairos Power, LLC, (Kairos) of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs revised resource estimate for the review of the topical report KP-TR-020-P, Safety Analysis Methodology for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Test Reactor, Revision 0 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML24156A162). By letter dated July 3, 2024 (ML24184A056),

the staff accepted KP-TR-020-P for review and estimated that the review of the topical report would require 800 hours0.00926 days
0.222 hours
0.00132 weeks
3.044e-4 months
. The staff began a regulatory audit on September 25, 2024. Following regulatory audit meetings with Kairos, it was determined that additional staff resources would be needed to complete the technical review primarily due to revisions to the topical report resulting in additional scope of the review. Therefore, the staff is revising its estimate from 800 to 1,100 hours0.00116 days
0.0278 hours
1.653439e-4 weeks
3.805e-5 months
to complete the technical review. The revised resource estimate is based on the staffs judgement regarding the estimated level of effort necessary to complete the technical review and develop the safety evaluation. The staff determined that the initial schedule for the technical review remains valid and plans to issue the draft safety evaluation by August 11, 2025.

This revision in hours was discussed with Kairos on March 11, 2025.

Please reach out if you have questions.
