Meeting Summary:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ML21180A271). The staff discussed with Oklo its proposed approach to material categorization and physical protection for a fuel recycling facility.
During the open portion of the meeting, Oklo presented an overview of Oklos pyroprocessing-based fuel recycling facility. Oklo also discussed the use of existing NRC guidance in developing its approach to material categorization and physical protection (ML24331A245).
The goal of this meeting was to obtain feedback from the NRC staff on Oklos proposed approach to material categorization and physical protection for the fuel recycling facility, which would inform the next steps in the pre-application engagement process.
At the end of the open portion of the meeting, members of the public were invited to provide comments or ask the NRC staff questions pertaining to the scope of the meeting. One member of the public asked about the status of the SECY paper on enhanced security for special nuclear material, noting that this rulemaking could result in a material impact on the security design of a fuel recycling facility. The NRC staff responded that the SECY paper is under management review and has not yet been transmitted to the Commission.
