SUMMARY
OF OCTOBER 30, 2024, PERIODIC ADVANCED REACTOR STAKEHOLDER PUBLIC MEETING On October 30, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held an information meeting with a question-and-answer session with stakeholders to discuss advanced reactor topics including:
Section 401 of the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Nuclear for Clean Energy (ADVANCE) Act of 2024, Advanced reactor licensing update, and Advanced reactor fire brigade sizing analysis.
The meeting notice is available in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System at Accession No. ML24304A896, and the presentation slides are available under Accession No. ML24301A001. The attendees for the meeting were not captured due to a technical issue.
For each topic listed above, the NRC staff provided information and allotted time for stakeholder comments and questions. Stakeholders provided feedback on these topics and asked clarifying questions. NRC staff appreciates the feedback provided and no follow-up actions were identified.
NRC staff made a presentation on the NRC proposed submittal of a report to Congress in response to Section 401 of the ADVANCE Act of 2024. The expected outcome of this presentation was that the NRC was soliciting external stakeholder feedback to support the development of the report to congress. It was projected that the report will be ready by January 2025.
The NRC staff provided a brief update on status of advanced reactor licensing activities, including recently completed reviews and brief statistics on applications/licensing reviews currently in progress at the division.
On the topic of fire brigade sizing analysis, the Nuclear Energy Institute discussed draft technical guidance they develop, to assist advanced reactor vendors. The guidance is intended to assist in the development of fire protection plans with a fire brigade size that supports the plant needs, risk, and concept of operations.
