OF NOVEMBER 12, 2024, TECHNICAL EXCHANGE CLOSED MEETING WITH WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ON COBALT-60 PRODUCTION IN WESTINGHOUSE PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS (EPID L-2024-LRO-0042)
On November 12, 2024, a closed hybrid meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse), and Nordion (Canada)
Inc. (Nordion). The meeting was closed due to the proprietary nature of the information discussed.
The purpose of the meeting was for the Westinghouse representatives to provide an update on Westinghouse Cobalt-60 activities. The Westinghouse representatives started the presentation by providing updates on Cobalt-60 production program and cobalt burnable absorber (COBA) design. The presentation continued with Westinghouse representatives providing an overview of COBA rodlet design and fluid benchmark testing to further validate computational fluid dynamics model results, details on the development of basis for capsule wear estimates, and first cycle post-irradiation examination. The Westinghouse representatives concluded their presentations with the overview of the digital serialization of capsules. After the discussions and closing remarks, the meeting was adjourned.
The meeting was noticed on October 2, 2024 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML24310A201). By letter dated November 6, 2024, Westinghouse submitted presentation slides to the NRC Document Control Desk (ADAMS Package Accession No. ML24313A037). The list of attendees is enclosed.
