Response to June 11, 2024 email on remediation of mine waste Date:
Tuesday, June 25, 2024 5:04:13 PM Mr. Ewing,
I am responding to your email to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated June 11, 2024, related Disas high pressure slurry ablation technology.
Thank you for your letter and your interest in this topic. The NRC staff appreciates hearing your perspective. The Commission continues to evaluate the NRC staffs options for licensing emerging technologies that potentially may be useful for the remediation of mine waste. The NRC staffs goal was to identify an efficient and risk-informed approach to licensing these technologies in accordance with our mission to protect public health and safety and the environment to facilitate cleanup of legacy uranium contamination. Once the Commission makes a decision, the NRC staff intends to engage with stakeholders as part of our process in implementing the selected option.
If you have any questions, please contact Bill VonTill, Branch Chief, Uranium Recovery and Materials Decommissioning Branch, Division of Decommissioning, Uranium Recovery, and Waste Projects, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards. Bill can be reached at (301) 415-0598 or via email at Bill.vonTill@nrc.gov.
Sincerely,
Jane Marshall
