Dr. Cerrato,
I am responding to your letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated May 14, 2024, related to the options for licensing of emerging technologies to remediate mine waste.
Thank you for your letter and your interest in this topic. The NRC staff appreciates hearing your perspective, particularly with respect to potential exposures to metal mixtures in water and soil. As you note in your letter, remediation of abandoned uranium mine sites on the Navajo Nation is a significant challenge. The Commission continues to evaluate the NRC staffs options for licensing emerging technologies that potentially may be useful for the remediation of mine waste. The NRC staffs goal was to identify an efficient and risk-informed approach to licensing these technologies in accordance with our mission to protect public health and safety and the environment to facilitate cleanup of legacy uranium contamination. Once the Commission makes a decision, the NRC staff intends to engage with stakeholders as part of our process in implementing the selected option.
