I am responding to your letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated May 9, 2024, related to the options for licensing of emerging technologies to remediate mine waste.
Thank you for your letter and your interest in this topic. As you are aware, the Commission continues to evaluate the NRC staffs options for licensing emerging technologies that may be useful for the remediation of mine waste. The NRC staff appreciates hearing your views on how these remedial technologies should be licensed. The NRC staffs goal was to identify an efficient and risk-informed approach to licensing these technologies in accordance with our mission to protect public health and safety and the environment to facilitate cleanup of legacy uranium contamination. Once the Commission makes a decision, the NRC staff intends to engage with stakeholders as part of our process in implementing the selected option.
