Meeting Summary:

On September 28, 2023, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a public meeting via webinar with Kairos representatives. The NRC staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ML21180A271). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and obtain clarification on technical aspects pertaining to Kaiross, Instrument Setpoint Methodology for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor, Instrument Setpoint Methodology Topical Report (TR) (ML23152A183). Highlights from the meeting include the following:

The NRC and Kairos discussed three clarification questions (ML23268A465) regarding regulatory information and principal design criteria (PDC), limiting safety system settings (LSSS), and correction of non-random uncertainties described in the TR.

Kairos stated that it will revise the TR to clarify: (1) the applicability of regulations and PDCs, (2) the guidance considered regarding LSSS, and (3) its treatment of non-random uncertainties.

The public had an opportunity to ask questions to the NRC staff at the end of the meeting. Members of the public were in attendance, but voiced no comments or questions.

No regulatory decisions were made as a result of this meeting.

Subsequent to the public meeting, by letter dated October 4, 2023, Kairos submitted to the NRC staff a revised version of its TR (ML23277A313) addressing the issues noted in the clarification questions.
