Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Schedules Open House to Discuss Harris Nuclear Power Plant Performance Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold an open house May 17 to discuss the 2022 safety performance of the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant. The single-unit Harris plant is located in New Hill, North Carolina, and operated by Duke Energy.

The event will run from 6-7 p.m. Eastern time at the New Hill Community Center, 3101 New Hill Holleman Road, in New Hill. NRC employees responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to answer questions at the meeting.

NRC resident inspectors and other specialist inspectors from the NRC Region II office in Atlanta perform inspections at the Harris plant. They concluded that Harris operated safely in 2022, and all inspection findings and performance indicators were green or of very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

The annual assessment letter for the Harris plant, including upcoming inspection plans, is available on the NRC website. Current performance information for both units is available on the NRC website and updated quarterly.
