Staggered RAIs: CASTOR geo69 Storage Application - Shielding evaluation Date: Friday, December 22, 2023 6:27:00 AM

Dear Dominik Bussmann,

The schedule for conducting the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff review of your submittal indicates an estimated date to issue requests for additional information (RAIs) by November 2023. However, the RAI letter may be issued, approximately, in early February 2024.

Nevertheless, the NRC staff has completed the development of a group of RAIs related to the materials, structural, and thermal evaluations. Therefore, we have decided to stagger the RAIs and transmit them to you as they are completed. At this time, I am transmitting the RAIs completed up to this point for your information and to allow you to start working on your responses. Since these RAIs may contain proprietary information, I uploaded the files in the NRCs box and provided access to the files to you. Please note that these RAIs may change as we develop RAIs in other areas of the review.

A comprehensive RAI package with the final RAIs will be issued by the date referenced above. You may provide your responses to the staggered RAIs in phases or you may submit all of the responses in a single submittal (i.e., the responses should be submitted altogether in your response letter to the NRC).

In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 2.390 of the NRCs Agency Rules of Practice and Procedure, a copy of this communication, without the enclosure, will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records component of the NRCs ADAMS. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room).

If you have any questions regarding this communication, please contact me via e-mail to Norma.GarciaSantos@nrc.gov.

Sincerely, Norma Garcia Santos Project Manager Storage and Transportation Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Management Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards
