SUMMARY
OF THE TECHNICAL EXCHANGE CLOSED MEETING WITH WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ON COBALT-60 PRODUCTION IN WESTINGHOUSE PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS (EPID L-2023-TOP-0035)
On July 19, 2023, a closed hybrid meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse) representatives, and Nordion (Canada) Inc. (Nordion) representatives. The meeting was closed due to the proprietary nature of the information discussed.
The purpose of the meeting was for the Westinghouse representatives to provide an update on Westinghouse Cobalt-60 activities. The Westinghouse representatives started the presentation by providing an update on Cobalt-60 production program. The presentation continued with Westinghouse representatives providing details on cobalt burnable absorber (COBA) thermal-hydraulic analysis including COBA rodlet design criteria, capsule wear and fatigue analysis, safety analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, accident dose, gamma heating, and spent fuel pool criticality. The presentation concluded with the overview of the structure and content of a future license amendment request (LAR), and the LARs estimated schedule. After the discussions and closing remarks, the meeting was adjourned.
The meeting was noticed on June 27, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML23178A065). By letter dated July 17, 2023, Westinghouse submitted presentation slides to the NRC (ADAMS Package Accession No. ML23198A364).
