Dear Dr. Brooks:
By letter dated June 26, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML23178A259), the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) submitted a revised Regulatory Engagement Plan providing updated information regarding UIUCs plans to submit construction permit and operating license applications to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a proposed research reactor, the Micro-Modular Reactor, that would be located on the UIUC campus and use a high temperature gas-cooled reactor design developed by the Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation.
This letter is to inform UIUC that, effective July 10, 2023, Mr. Edward Helvenston of the Non-Power Production and Utilization Facility Licensing Branch, within the Division of Advanced Reactors and Non-Power Production and Utilization Facilities, in the NRCs Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, was assigned as the NRCs lead licensing project manager (PM) for UIUC to support continued preapplication interactions and licensing activities. Going forward, Mr. Helvenston will be the primary PM and NRC point of contact for UIUC regarding any licensing activities.
