CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NUMBER J/2026/AF-96 FOR THE MODEL MX-6 PACKAGE - REVALIDATION RECOMMENDATION
Dear Richard Boyle:
By letter dated May 4, 2022 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System
[ADAMS] Accession No. ML22333A754), as supplemented on November 17, 2022 (ML23020A176), March 8, 2023 (ML23100A108), and April 10, 2023 (ML23142A214), the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT) requested that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff perform a review of the Japanese Competent Authority Certificate J/2026/AF-96, Revision 0, for the Model MX-6 transport package, and make a recommendation concerning the revalidation of the package for import and export use.
Based on the NRCs review of the statements and representations contained in the October 11, 2021, letter (contained in ML22333A754), from Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel Ltd. to DOT, entitled Revalidation of Containers required for Fresh Fuel Recovery Projects, which included MX-6 Safety Analysis Report, as supplemented by letter dated November 11, 2022, (contained in ML23020A176) from Transnuclear Ltd. Tokyo to DOT, entitled Appendices MX-6P and MX06 1F6 SAR, and for the reasons stated in the enclosed safety evaluation report, the NRC recommends revalidation of Japanese Certificate of Competent Authority J/2036/AF-96, Revision 0, for the MX-6 transport package with no additional conditions.
Upon removal of enclosure 2, this document is decontrolled.
