Nuclear Matters Comments on the Scope of the Environmental Impact Statement for TRISO-X Nuclear Fuel Fabrication Facility Comments submitted to the NRC electronically using the email address TRISOX-EIS@nrc.gov

[Docket ID NRC-2022-0201]

Nuclear Matters is a national coalition that works to inform the public and policymakers about the benefits of nuclear energy. We are a diverse community of advocates from all walks of life and across the country who support policy solutions that properly value nuclear energy as a reliable, affordable, safe and carbon-free energy source.

On behalf of our advocates from across the country, we are reaching out regarding the Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRC) public comment period on the scope of its environmental impact statement (EIS) pertaining to TRISO-X's proposed nuclear fuel facility to be built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Nuclear Matters applauds the NRC soliciting feedback on the scope of this EIS and recognizes the significant effort by the industry to streamline environmental reviews for first-of-a-kind advanced nuclear demonstration projects. If approved, this facility would be the first commercial advanced nuclear reactor fuel fabrication facility (TF3) in North America, a critical step forward for the secure deployment of advanced reactors and building a domestic nuclear fuel supply chain. Advanced reactor technologies offer a clean source of carbon-free energy that can be deployed with safety at an affordable cost and will play a key role in securing Americas clean energy future.

Advanced reactors are crucial to meeting our nations carbon reduction goals, strengthening energy security and solidifying the U.S.s global leadership on advanced nuclear technology. The advancement of new reactor technologies also provides a career pathway for the next generation of nuclear industry professionals, creating well-paying jobs that support our energy independence.

Nuclear Matters encourages the scope of the EIS to fully recognize these positive economic, environmental and national security impacts, plus the long safety record of the commercial nuclear power sector.

We appreciate the opportunity to provide comments on the scope of the EIS.

Sincerely, Nuclear Matters
