Even if properly put into mothballs, things deteriorate and risks of contamination remain. Why would we want to selfishly leave behind such albatrosses and booby traps for future generations to wrestle with and perhaps lose to? Is this question satisfactorily addressed in any EIS pertaining to nuclear energy that is put into the service of making profits? Even if we are as responsible as we can be with these materials now, there are no guarantees and only risks, no returns, beyond the useful life of a nuclear facility.
