It's important that we diversify our energy systems away from the fossil fuels we currently use, and nuclear is the best scalable option to do that without substantial harm to our economy.
A lot depends on energy being cheap, reliable, and easily available. While renewables like solar and wind are good additions, they can't hope to meet the total current energy needs of the US in any realistic universe. If we are serious about reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, we can't afford to leave nuclear power generation off of our list the way we have for so many years. We need to adopt a "yes and" strategy when it comes to meeting our energy needs. "Yes and" needs to include nuclear power.
