SUMMARY
OF THE TECHNICAL EXCHANGE CLOSED MEETING WITH WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ON COBALT-60 PRODUCTION IN WESTINGHOUSE PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS (EPID L-2022-LRO-0153)
On December 14, 2022, a closed virtual meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse) representatives, and Nordion (Canada) Inc. (Nordion) representatives. The meeting was closed due to the proprietary nature of the information discussed.
The purpose of the meeting was for the Westinghouse representatives to provide an update on Westinghouse Cobalt-60 activities. The Westinghouse representatives started the presentation by providing an overview of Cobalt-60 applications, historical background of the Cobalt-60 production program, and highlighting supply challenges. The presentation continued with Westinghouse representatives describing assembly design and qualification, outlining spent fuel pool criticality approach, the plans to produce Cobalt-60 in Westinghouse pressurized water reactors, and transfer Cobalt-60 byproduct material to Nordions facility. The presentation concluded with the review of an estimated license amendment schedule and a summary, and after the closing remarks and discussions, the meeting was adjourned.
The meeting was noticed on November 22, 2022 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML22343A122). By letter dated December 12, 2022, Westinghouse submitted presentation slides to the NRC (ADAMS Accession No. ML22346A251). The list of attendees is enclosed.
