OF JUNE 23, 2022, CLOSED MEETING WITH FRAMATOME, INC. AND THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION ON PRE-SUBMITTAL DISCUSSIONS REGARDING COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS METHODOLOGY TOPICAL REPORT (EPID L-2022-LRO-0072)

On June 23, 2022, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a closed hybrid meeting via Microsoft Teams and in-person with representatives from Framatome, Inc.

(Framatome). The purpose of the meeting was for the NRC and Framatome to hold pre-submittal discussions on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodology Topical Report (TR). The meeting notice is available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML22160A661.

During the meeting, Framatome representatives and NRC staff discussed Framatomes presentations on Background and Motivation for CFD methodology, proposed TR content, Single-Phase CFD methodology highlights, validation of pressure loss CFD methodology, proposed sample problems, and future interactions.

A list of the attendees is enclosed. The Framatome presentation materials, including this meeting summary, can be found at ADAMS Package Accession No. ML22174A417.

The NRC staff noted several areas of potential review interest associated with Framatomes presentation, including the following:

The circumstances under which the CFD methodology may replace testing, and any conditions where confirmatory testing would be required.

The correspondence of the range of conditions over which Framatome has validated its CFD methodology to the proposed application scope.

The approach used to perform code and solution verification for the CFD methodology.

The approach used to perform validation for the CFD methodology.

Procedural controls for minimizing user error and a demonstration of their effectiveness.

The modeling guidelines for the CFD methodology, such as those that define the level of geometric detail required to assure a sufficiently accurate calculation.

The process for determining the uncertainty associated with figures of merit calculated using the CFD methodology and, as applicable, how this uncertainty is combined with other relevant uncertainties.

A second CFD pre-submittal meeting between the NRC and Framatome will be planned.
