I am responding to your letter of May 26, 2022, from Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML22167A041, to Christopher T. Hanson, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), regarding your views on the role of nuclear power and the need for disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
Consistent with statutory requirements, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for developing the national nuclear waste management strategy and for its implementation. The DOE is also responsible for ongoing research and development related to the long-term disposition of spent nuclear fuel.
The mission of the NRC as an independent regulatory agency is to license and regulate the Nations civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear materials in order to protect public health and safety, promote the common defense and security, and protect the environment. The NRC reviews applications and will license facilities that meet our regulations, including facilities for disposal of high-level nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel.
