Dear Margaret,
The NRC staff assessed the updated content in the topical report, Graphite Material Qualification for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled, High Temperature Reactor, KP-TR-014, Revision 2, submitted on May 11, 2022 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML22132A203). Based on the submittal date and content of the report, the NRC staff revised the schedule and level of effort to complete the technical review of the topical report and subsequent milestones.
Revision 2 Submittal Date: May 11, 2022 Request for Additional Information on Revision 2: June 30, 2022 (if needed)
Response from Kairos: July 30, 2022 (if needed)
Draft Safety Evaluation (SE): September 15, 2022 Meeting with the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards: October 2022 (Exact date TBD)
Issuance of Final SE: November 30, 2022 Original Estimated Level of Effort: 610 Hours Updated Estimated Level of Effort: 710 Hours The schedule extension and increase in the level of effort account for additional staff time needed to review the applicability of the topical report to the Hermes test reactor, multiple meetings held with Kairos to discuss responses to preliminary questions and revisions to the topical report, requests for clarifications, and time required by Kairos to prepare and submit revisions to the report. These tasks and the effort required to address them were not envisioned in the NRC staffs initial estimates of the schedule and level of effort provided in the acceptance review of Revision 1 of the topical report (ADAMS Accession No. ML21215A495).
