New Reactor Licensing Branch Division of New and Renewed Licenses Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
SUBJECT:
U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION
SUMMARY
OF THE SEPTEMBER 29, 2021, OBSERVATION PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS NUSCALE POWER, LLCS APPROACH FOR TREATMENT OF DC POWER IN SAFETY ANALYSIS The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held an observation public meeting on September 29, 2021, to discuss NuScale Power, LLCs (NuScales) approach for treatment of DC Power in Safety Analysis. NuScale requested this meeting to provide the NRC management and staff with a high-level overview of its approach and to solicit preliminary feedback to inform a planned topical report (TR) submittal on the proposed methodology. NuScale plans to submit the TR in May 2022.
The public meeting notice dated September 29, 2021, was posted on the NRC public website, and can be found in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management Systems (ADAMS) Accession No. ML21271A636. Information related to NuScale presentation can be found under ML21266A433 (Nonproprietary) and ML21266A437 (Proprietary).
Enclosed are the meeting agenda (Enclosure 1), list of participants (Enclosure 2), and overview (Enclosure 3).

U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION
SUMMARY
OF THE SEPTEMBER 29, 2021, OBSERVATION PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS NUSCALE POWER, LLCS APPROACH FOR TREATMENT OF DC POWER IN SAFETY ANALYSIS OVERVIEW September 29, 2022 The U.S. Information related to NuScale presentation can be found under Agencywide Documents Access and Management Systems Accession Nos. ML21266A433 (Nonproprietary) and ML21266A437 (Proprietary).
During the open portion of the meeting, NuScale stated that it is implementing a modified approach to the treatment of DC power supply in Chapter 15 design-basis events for the planned Standard Design Approval Application. The modified approach leverages the augmented quality DC power system design to eliminate event progressions with coincident loss of DC and AC power following turbine trip. NuScale also stated that the treatment is consistent with identified design failure modes and there will be no change to loss of AC power timing assumptions.
During the closed portion of the meeting, NuScale gave a presentation showing details of their proposed methodology. The NRC staff provided feedback throughout the presentation and NuScale agreed to address the feedback in the planned TR.
