Follow-on COVID-19 Lesson Learned -

Preliminary Recommendations ROP Public Meeting May 26, 2022 Jeff Bream

The WG held - Topics included health and safety of personnel, prioritization of inspections, inspector access to licensee information, and long-term public meetings improvements for the ROP.

  • April 5, 2022: Meeting Summary (ML22116A124) to solicit - Topics included efficient and effective inspection methodologies, information technology, and long-term monitoring of impacts from feedback the public health emergency

The WGs preliminary conclusions align with internal and external feedback

  • On-site inspections continue to be the most effective and preferred inspection method.
  • Application of existing inspection program flexibility to perform portions of inspections remotely allows for greater flexibility in meeting inspection objectives but requires proactive coordination with licensees.
  • Lessons learned are applicable to other situations of limited access to licensee facilities

The WG recommendations fall into three general areas Enhance inspection guidance to incorporate best practices and lessons Enhance learned to conduct inspections Work with licensees to improve inspector access to licensee documents and Improve records and take steps to promote agency assessment and monitoring of IT capability for licensee communications and information sharing.

Utilize the baseline inspection program to monitor for adverse trends in Monitor licensee performance attributable to insufficient staff training, deferred maintenance or testing, or human performance.

The WG is finalizing the conclusions and recommendations for our final report

  • Any additional input will be factored into our report and next steps.
  • On track for completion this summer.
