May 18, 2022 Dr. Eric Orzeck The Endocrine Center ATTN: Certification Board of Nuclear Endocrinology 10837 Katy Freeway, Suite 200 Houston, Texas 77079

SUBJECT:

CERTIFICATION BOARD OF NUCLEAR ENDOCRINOLOGY, CONFIRMATION OF INACTIVE STATUS AND REQUEST FOR TERMINATION DATE

Dear Dr. Orzeck:

The Certification Board of Nuclear Endocrinology (CBNE) has not responded to the U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRC) letter dated March 15, 2022, which requested a response within 30 days. The letter requested confirmation that the CBNE continues to satisfy the NRC recognition criteria for specialty board certification processes. This letter is in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS), Accession No. ML22069A714. We have not received a response to this letter.

Since the CBNE website is inactive, there is no current CBNE email address, and the telephone has been disconnected, I am writing to you through your medical practice to request confirmation that CBNE has become inactive. The last documented NRC contact with CBNE was when CBNE submitted two certificates to the NRC on September 17, 2013.

We are aware that there was a business relationship between CBNE and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE), as explained in a February 22, 2011, letter (ADAMS Accession No. ML111260527). We contacted AACE and learned from a Member Service Professional that a decision had been made in 2018 for CBNE to be administratively dissolved by the state of Florida as of September 27, 2019. AACE did not have information regarding when the last course or examination was provided. AACE informed us that the last time the Nuclear Medicine Endocrine Certifying Board Committee was appointed was in 2017-2018. A record of this appointment was available in the AACE committee appointment rosters.

We are attempting to calculate a termination date for CBNEthat is, the date after which CBNE certifications will no longer be recognized by the NRC. Please respond in writing within 30 days of the date of this letter and address the following:

1) When did the CBNE become inactive or disband?
2) When was the last time the CBNE held an examination?

E. Orzeck 2

3) Confirm whether the specialty board satisfied the board recognition criteria in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 351, Medical Use of Byproduct Material, at the time of the last examination. If not, provide the date of the last examination that satisfied the board recognition criteria:
a. 10 CFR 35.190, "Training for uptake, dilution, and excretion studies."
b. 10 CFR 35.392, "Training for the oral administration of sodium iodide I-131 requiring a written directive in quantities less than or equal to 1.22 gigabecquerels (33 millicuries)."
c. 10 CFR 35.394, "Training for the oral administration of sodium iodide I-131 requiring a written directive in quantities greater than 1.22 gigabecquerels (33 millicuries)."
4) What do you believe is a reasonable termination date and why?

If you do not believe that termination of NRC recognition of the boards certification processes is appropriate, please provide an explanation.

If the board fails to respond within 30 days of the date of this letter, the NRC staff will determine the termination date.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding, a copy of this letter, along with your response letter, will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRCs Public Document Room or in ADAMS, accessible from the NRC website at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.

1 The 10 CFR Part 35 index is available for review at: https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/cfr/part035/index.html.
