OF THE TECHNICAL EXCHANGE CLOSED MEETING WITH WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ON COBALT-60 PRODUCTION IN WESTINGHOUSE PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS (EPID L-2022-LRO-0009)
On January 27, 2022, a closed virtual meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse), and Nordion (Canada) Inc. (Nordion) representatives. The purpose of the meeting was for Westinghouse representatives to present information on the classification and tracking of irradiated Cobalt-60 capsules that will be transferred to Nordions facility. The meeting was a follow-up meeting to the closed virtual meeting held on May 21, 2021, when Westinghouse representatives presented information related to the classification of Cobalt-60 material (meeting summary package available at Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)
Accession No. ML21146A055). The January 27, 2022, presentation included historical background of the Cobalt-60 production program and the Westinghouse assessment of NRCs regulations. The Westinghouse representatives outlined the plans to produce Cobalt-60 in Westinghouse pressurized water reactors and transfer Cobalt-60 byproduct material to Nordions facility. The meeting was closed due to the proprietary nature of the information discussed.
The meeting was noticed on January 5, 2022 (ADAMS Accession No. ML22005A176).
By letter dated January 24, 2022, Westinghouse submitted presentation slides to the NRC (ADAMS Accession No. ML22025A396). The list of attendees is enclosed.
