- 1. The problem of embrittlement, especially of Reactor #2, which was cited by the NRC as one of the most embrittled RPVs in the United States and the consequent risk of contamination of air, water and land that will gravely affect residents of WI as well as Lake Michigan which provides the drinking water for millions of people.
- 2. Concern about threats of thermal water which can destroy fish larvae and phytoplankton. This plant was built just prior to the requirement for cooling towers.
- 3. Toxic waste with nowhere to go. there are already an estimated 965 metric tons of high-level nuclear wastes from 1970 to 2017. Much more toxic waste will be present, a total of 1,323 metric tons of waste, that will remain in dry cask storage on the shore of lake Michigan by 2030/2033.
- 4. The impact of climate change adds to the vulnerability of the Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 and 2 due to the increase of stronger, more frequent and damaging storms.
This writer hopes that alternative energy sources can be developed to meet energy needs in the area served by Point Beach Nuclear Plant that are safer and cleaner. I do not regard nuclear energy as clean energy due to the destructive toxic wastes left behind and the increased chance of accidents with the embrittled and aged reactors, as well as due to the effects of climate change which is upon us.
