OF THE TECHNICAL EXCHANGE CLOSED MEETING WITH WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ON COBALT-60 PRODUCTION IN WESTINGHOUSE PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS (EPID: L-2021-LRO-0026)
On May 20, 2021, a closed virtual meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse), and Nordion Inc.
representatives. The purpose of the meeting was for Westinghouse to present information on the classification of Cobalt-60 byproduct material. The presentation included historical background of the Cobalt-60 production program and the Westinghouse assessment of the NRC regulations. The Westinghouse representatives outlined the plans to produce Cobalt-60 in Westinghouse pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and transfer Cobalt-60 byproduct to the Nordions facility. The meeting was closed due to the proprietary nature of the information discussed. The meeting was a follow up meeting to the closed virtual meeting held on July 15, 2020, when Westinghouse representatives presented information related to the Westinghouse plans on Cobalt-60 production in the Westinghouse PWRs (meeting summary package Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML20234A463).
The meeting was noticed on May 3, 2021 (ADAMS Accession No. ML21123A070).
By letter dated May 18, 2021, Westinghouse submitted presentation slides (ADAMS Accession No. ML21139A322). The list of attendees is enclosed.
