OF JANUARY 26, 2021, PARTIALLY CLOSED MEETING TO DISCUSS TERRESTRIAL ENERGY USA POSTULATED INITIATING EVENTS WHITE PAPER REVIEW REQUESTS On January 26, 2021 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)
Accession No. ML21015A523), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a partially closed meeting to discuss Terrestrial Energy USA (TEUSA) review requests in the white paper associated with postulated initiating events (PIE) for the integral molten salt reactor (IMSR) design submitted to the NRC for review. By letter dated October 22, 2020 (ADAMS Accession No. ML20318A169), TEUSA requested that the NRC staff review the white paper and referenced documents, and approve the following:
- 1. The list of postulated initiating events, which was developed in a manner that identifies all reasonable potential events that could occur in the IMSR.
- 2. The methodology used to develop the list of PIE.
- 3. The threshold used to establish the category of AOOs [anticipated operational occurrences].
- 4. The threshold used to establish the category of DBAs [design basis accidents].
- 5. The use of the list of PIE in future licensing applications.
The NRC staff asked clarification questions in order to inform the staffs review. At the conclusion of the meeting, the NRC staff indicated that formal feedback will be provided to TEUSA on their review requests for TEUSAs consideration in the near future. The list of attendees to this meeting is included as an enclosure to this meeting summary. Staff from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission were invited by NRC staff as observers to this meeting.
