PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION October 15, 1976 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PNO-76-170 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information Presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
DIESEL GENERATOR EXHAUST MANIFOLD FIRE NRC:I Inspector onsite reported that during surveillance, one of four diesel generators unloaded and tripped at 10:53 p.m. October 14, 1976.
Upon investigation an exhaust manifold fire was found and was visible from the Diesel Building exterior.
The local volunteer fire department was called as a precaution but did not enter the site. The fire was extinguished by cooling down the manifold with a fire hose. The fire was caused by carry-over of partially burned fuel into the hot manifold exhaust.
The NRC:I Inspector advises there is no sign of external diesel gen-erator damage.
The vendor (GM-Electromotive) has been contacted. Out of service time is unknown at present. The plant is operating with the alternate bank of two diesels running continuously and has seven days to complete repairs or shutdown.
Media interest is not expected. The State of New York has been informed.
A press release is not planned.
Region I, NRC, Philadelphia, Pa. received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the inspector onsite at 8:30 a.m. 10/15/76.
