'This-preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all,that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

HIGH AIRBORNE ACTIVITY IN REACTOR BUILDING Region I, Philadelphia was informed that personnel in the Reactor Build-ing at the J. A. FitzPatrick facility were required to leave the Building at 9:45 a.m. today due to high airborne radioactivity levels. The facility emergency procedures were implemented when the reactor building vent monitor alarmed and isolated the vent at 10 times the normc1 background level. The source of the activity was attributed to clean-up filter -

, backwash operations being conducted following an unrelated recctor shutdown. ,

Airborne levels returned to normal within 15 minutes, and plant per-sonnel resumed preparations to startup the facility.

l l The liceusee stated that no personnel overexposure occurred.

Media interest is expected.becau,se of continued local interest in nuclear facilities and a number of outside agencies have been notified. The licensee is executing the complete emergency notifica-tion call list for drill purposes. The State of New York has been ,

inforvoed. A press release is not planned.

Region I, NRC, Philadelphia, Pa received notification of this occur-rence by telephone from the plant superintendent at 11:05 a.m., 6/18.
