- This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by OIE staff as of 4:00 p.m. on

CONTAMINATION OF LICENSEE EMPLOYEE A Region I (Philadelphia) inspector on site informed the Region I office by telephone at 12:05 p.m. that an equipment operator working in the radwaste building was sprayed with 165 degree caustic radioactive liquid while attempting to clear a plugged concentrated liquid caustic waste line.

Liquid activity was 1.37 uci/ml. ,

I The man was immediately showered and then determined to be free of I contamination. No ingestion was reported. As a precautionary step, he was taken to a local dermatologist to check apparent reddening of some l ['} areas of skin. The man returned to work within two hours of the incident.

Approximately five gallons of liquid was spilled. No other contamination or release problems,resulted. The desirability of further testing of the individual involved is being evaluated by the licensee and Region I.

Media interest can be expected in that plant incidents are frequently covered by the press. The State of New Jersey has been informed. A press release is not planned.

NRC, Region I, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania received notification of this occurrence by telephone from inspector on site at 12:05 p.m., March 19. (j This information is current as of 3:00 p.m. ,-
