Boston Edison Company Plymouth, Massachusetts Subjects' PRELIMINARY INSERVICE INSPECTION FINDINGS DURING REFUELING OUTAGE The Region I, Philadelphia, office.was informed on February 17 that the licensee intends to complete a design change for removal and capping of the two 4" recirculation system bypass lines. This fix was employed recently by another BWR reactor,(Quad Cities)-to eliminate the 4 inch bypass pipe lines which had experienced recurrent cracks. Although NRR approval for the design change may be required, this issue should not
. affect the outage schedule.
D The Region I specialist in UT has reported that the latest UT work j
performed on the 12 inch recirculation system vessel inlet nozzle j
has determined the ultrasonic amplitude to be lower than originally determined on February 12, 1976.. The latest determinations are based g
on a calibration block of actual vessel material. The licensee is 4
proceeding to further characterize and refine the flaw size measurements o
to determine if significant changes have occurred since the 1974 in-Q service inspection. Preliminary results reported by the licensee indicate that the actual flaw size may be greater than that ireported to and evaluated by.the NRR staff and ACRS in May 1974. ACRS con-sideration and NRR approval will most likely be required prior to the resumption of operations. A formal report on this matter is
.being prepared by the. licensee. This~ issue is an important one that
'could result in an extended shutdown if-a repair to the vessel is.
