Subject:

RADIOACTIVITY LEVELS IN THE ENVIRONMENT (See PNO-76-05 & PN-75-136) I Oyster samples collected on October 13, 1975 within 500 feet of the Millstone Point discharge exhibited concentrations greater than 10 times the concentrations observed at the control station.

The concentrations are approximately the same as values previously reported by the licensee in routine Environmental Reports. However due to the special .

reporting requirements in Millstone l's recently effective Environmental Technical Specifications, a formal Non-Routine 10 day Report, after con-firmatory analysis, is now required for this situation.

The values in (pCi/g) were:

Mn-54 Co-60 Zn-65 Cs-134 Cs-137 Control Station <0.03 0.03

<0.06 <.0.025 0.035 Near Discharge 1.8 4.4 2.8 1.0 0.93 Assuming 5 Kg/ year for a high average individual oyster intake, these concentrations in oysters would result in a dose to both the whole body and GI tract of approximately 1.1 mrem / year, which is about 1% of the dose due to natural background in this area.

g Media interest is possible in that the report is placed in the PDR and /

Millstone has received considerable attention lately. It is more likely /

that this issue will receive attention when the annual report is submitted on or about April 1976 because of media, local, state and Congressional interest. The State of Connecticut has been informed. A press release y{

is not planned.

Region I, NRC, Philadelphia, Pa. received notification of this occurrence by letter from Northeast Nuclear Energy Company on 3/3/76.
